ARCADIA -- Grocery shopping has taken on new significance for local families participating in the Learning Together Family Literacy Academy at the Family Service Center. Approximately 20 adult students recently completed a series of classes designed to enhance their knowledge about the importance of providing healthy meals for their families. They also learned how to better budget their family food costs.

The students then went on a field trip to a Winn-Dixie store in Arcadia, where they relied on their new nutrition and wellness education to guide them though their excursion down the grocery store aisles. Winn-Dixie managers were on hand to provide assistance in selecting products and reading nutrition labels. The families also were able to learn about alternative and more healthful ways to prepare their favorite ethnic dishes.

"I am very happy that our local Winn-Dixie store has welcomed us into their store," said Elvia Valdovinos, a Learning Together student. "All of the employees were very helpful and nice to our class as we walked around the store selecting our food. I have learned beneficial information that will help to better improve the health of my family. Thank you so much, Winn-Dixie, for giving me this opportunity."
