How it Works

TEEN TRENDSETTERS READING MENTORS

  • Ambitious “Lead Teens” work with a teacher/advisor at their high school to set up the Teen Trendsetters™ Program.
  • Lead Teens recruit 15 classmates to join as mentors.
  • A partnership is established with a local elementary school to pair teens with 2-3rd grade students who need help with reading skills.
  • Teens receive training on effective leadership, mentoring skills.
  • Teen Trendsetters spend one hour a week during the school year providing one-on-one mentoring sessions to children.
  • All books and curriculum are provided by the Teen Trendsetter™ program. Curriculum is science focused, with books teaching children about animals, weather and famous leaders in science.
  • Advisors are eligible/may be eligible to receive an annual stipend of $1000 to oversee the program. Responsibilities include teen recruitment, parent consent forms, maintaining current mentor and mentee records, communication with elementary school, logistics for mentoring sessions and coordination with program managers.
  • Advisors report elementary student reading levels to monitor year-end progress.
  • Parent involvement is encouraged as a component of the reading program. Each mentee receives 15 Scholastic books to take home to read with their parents.

Teen Trendsetters is proudly managed by Volunteer USA and sponsored nationally by Comcast. The program receives support in Florida from the Legislature. Contact us at 850.562.5300 or info@volunteerusafund.org
