The 2010 Celebration of Reading event, which raises funds for Volunteer USA’s Family literacy efforts, was a smashing success. The annual Florida event is hosted by former Governor Jeb and Columba Bush. They were joined by his parents former President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush and a host of best-selling authors who delighted the crowd with their readings, all to promote reading and learning among parents and children.

~Students Wild about Youth Mentoring Event, featuring animals from Jacksonville Zoo~
Jacksonville, FL -- In observance of January as National Mentoring Month, more than 100 students from Jacksonville high schools and elementary schools were treated to a reading rally, held at Frank Peterson Academies of Technology, as part of their commitment to the Teen Trendsetters™ Reading Mentors program. Teen Trendsetters, an award-winning youth mentoring program launched in Florida in 2002, pairs high school teens with 2nd and 3rd graders to boost the reading skills of the younger students.

What a Treat! Kids love receiving and reading their favorite books. And, the Magic Tree House books series is a great favorite among young readers. Help us get into the Halloween spirit, by passing on your family’s gently-used Magic Tree House books. Your child might consider writing a personal message in the book to share with the next spellbound reader. Volunteer USA has a goal to collect 25,000 new and used Magic Tree House books for our Teen Trendsetters™ program, where high school volunteers step in to mentor struggling 2nd and 3rd graders each week.
