Comcast Cares Day, the nation’s largest single-day of corporate volunteerism, will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2009. Across the Southern Division, more than 8,000 Comcasters, along with friends and family, are expected to spend the day helping more than 80 non-profit organizations in 12 states.

Una veintena de mujeres hispanas, estudiantes del programa, participaron en una clase denominada “Aprenda buena nutrición y mejore la salud”, con un día de compras patrocinado por la cadena de supermercados Winn Dixie, donde a las madres participantes del programa Jump Start se les permitió hacer su ‘compra’ de alimentos gratuitamente.
ARCADIA -- Grocery shopping has taken on new significance for local families participating in the Learning Together Family Literacy Academy at the Family Service Center. Approximately 20 adult students recently completed a series of classes designed to enhance their knowledge about the importance of providing healthy meals for their families. They also learned how to better budget their family food costs.
Teens give back to community during National Mentoring Month
Savannah – Students from SCCPSS high schools today launched a new youth mentoring program aimed at helping younger students improve their reading skills and develop a love for learning. Approximately 150 teens from the high schools have been recruited to be reading mentors in the new Teen Trendsetters™ programs.

Palm Beach Gardens – Scholarships awarded simultaneously to parents and their children were announced today during a National Family Literacy Day Celebration in Palm Beach Gardens. Made possible by support from Dollar General and the Florida Prepaid College Foundation, Volunteer USA’s Family Literacy program is providing scholarships to parents who are outstanding students at family literacy academies and their young children. The awards were presented to celebrate the achievement of a select group of students during an annual luncheon celebrating the accomplishments of parents involved in family literacy programs throughout South Florida. NASSAU, The Bahamas – (3rd June 2008) – A delegation of officials from the American Embassy in Nassau led by Deputy Chief of Mission, Mr. David S. Elmo met with the Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture, the Honourable Carl Bethel and Minister of State for Youth and Sports and other senior officials at the Ministry to discuss the next phase of the reading and literacy project started by former Ambassador Mr. John Rood at the Woodcock Primary School. Mr. Elmo who was representing current ambassador Mr. Ned Siegel, who was unable to attend the meeting, stated that the Embassy was thrilled to partner with the Ministry in this initiative. NASSAU, The Bahamas, (October 2, 2008) – Primary school students across The Bahamas are now benefiting from a dynamic reading programme that is bringing community leaders, family members and business people into the classroom. The new Read to Lead initiative was announced today by the Minister of Education Carl Bethel and U.S. Ambassador Ned Siegel. Read to Lead organizers have recruited an initial group of community readers who are visiting students in 4th, 5th and 6th grades. The program reaches primary school students throughout New Providence, Grand Bahama, Abaco, Cat Island and Eleuthera.
